Walls of sandstone rise steeplyand a narrow cleft reveals the entrance to the Siq, the route into Petra. On the walls of the Siq are channels originally equipped with clay pipes to carry drinking water to the city. The Siq narrows to 15 foot width, with walls towering hundreds of feet overhead. Originally paved, the floor of the Siq is mostly covered with soft sand.
